If you look for it, you will see a photo of the recovered remains of the old 35W
Bridge (which collapsed on August 1, 2007) on this website. The photo will show that the remains are arranged purposefully
on a bank of the Mississippi, as if to reconstruct the structure of the undercarriage. This was most likely done for
forensic purposes but I don't know. Do you know? These twisted, mangled pieces of steel that once served as
the support of a concrete highway have been there on the bank for about a year now. I see them every morning when I
cross the Washington Avenue bridge on my way to work. If you are sitting high in a bus, traveling west across the Washington
Avenue bridge, you can't miss these remains as you look out over the river to your right (north).
What
were you doing at the exact time of the collapse of the 35W bridge? I was waiting for my bus to go home from work.
NOTE: I now know the reasons the bridge parts
are still there (Jan 1, 2010) are legal in nature. The victims of the collapse have insisted that these parts remain
there until all legal matters related to the collapse are settled. UPDATE - the parts have finally been moved and the
area is looking MUCH better - it has been restored to the park it was meant to be.
